What is it?
The National August Wilson Monologue Competition is a free arts education program, a celebration of the words of the playwright August Wilson, inspiring high school students to find and express themselves through theatre.
August Wilson was an American playwright. His literary legacy is a series of ten plays, The American Century Cycle, for which he received two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama. Each is set in a different decade, depicting the comic and tragic aspects of the African-American experience in the 20th century.

Essay Contest: Submission Deadline TBA 2020
Prize: Top 3 essays will receive $125 and get their essay published in Samuel French's national Breaking Character Magazine.

Broadway's August Wilson Theater, New York City
The free event is open tot he public and will feature high school students from around the country performing monologues by the late, celebrated American playwright. A panel of celebrity judges (yet to be announced) will evaluate the competitors and select a winner.
The first place winner last year received a cash prize of $3,000. The runner-up received $2,000 and third place received $1,000. Each of the winners also became eligible for college scholarships opportunities and all finalists received the gift of the Century Cycle collection. Denzel Washington is usually one of the judges.
